making patterns for knitted garments

hello,I am seasoned sewer/pattern maker. I would like to understand more regarding making and sewign of knitted fabrics. T-shirts/underwear-how does one establish the actual pattern measurements in relation to the strech of the cloth? I always get the garments too big!
