Hi

I have some lovely black tee-shirt material and would like to  make a tee-shirt (Irish/ UK  for short sleeve top for men) but I dont have any neck ribbing to finish the neckline. Can i use the tee-shirt fabric or do i need ribbing? Any ideas how to make a decent neck line using my fabric??

many thanks for your wonderful website and help.

Re: Making a Neckline from Knitted Fabric

Dear Tricone,

Thanks for your kind words, they are greatly appreciated.

To make a tee-shirt (t-Shirt) without ribbing material for a round neckline, you can cut a strip of fabric cross wise, twice as wide as the desires width plus two seam allowances to make a binding.

The length of the binding should be a bit less than the circumference of the neckline by about 2 to 3 cm, but you need to add the seam allowances at the ends. Then sew the ends together from the wrong side and press the seam open.

Next fold the binding in half along the length, match the edges and press. Now you have a folded ring.

You can place the seam at the center back of the tee-shirt (t-shirt).

If the neckline is v shaped, the seam should be placed at the center front. However you need to place the ends of the binding together differently, by overlapping them and if necessary trimming the corners. You can look at a v shaped neckline to get an idea of how to overlap the ends, or how to join the ends at the center front.

Hope this helps,

Nehzat
