Hello!
I would like information on altering a boys suit. My grandson wears a husky size suit. I've purchased two suits 16H and 18H. The 16H doesn't fit around the belly (Jacket and pants) the 18H is too large! The suit coat has vent at the sleeve. My question is, if I need to shorten the suit coat sleeve by 2 3/4" should I just forgo having the vent? or is there a way to keep it?

Also, is there a video on shortening the length of the suit jacket?

Your help would be very much appreciated!
Sylvia

Re: Altering a Boys Suite

Dear sabrbagit,

To adjust the sleeve length, it is possible to shorten the sleeves from the top, but I don't recommend it. Since there will be lots of work involved and need lots of experience in sewing sleeves to armholes for suits.

I suggest shortening the sleeves from the bottom. In this case you will lose the vents, but you can have an imitation of them by pressing the seam allowances of the section you will resew the buttons on, to one side.

Hem the sleeves first, sew back the buttons before joining the lining.

Happy sewing,

Nehzat
