I am trying to draft a pants pattern. I am a plus size and am having problems calculating darts. My waist is 122cm and my upper hip is 125cm and lower hip is 130cm. The video says to take the waist measurement (122cm) and subract from the lower hip (130cm) because it is the larger number between lower and upper hip. When I do that I get 8. Then it says to divide the 8 by 9 but I end up with a negative number. What should I do?
Thank you,
Kimberly
Dear Kimberly,
Once you subtract your waist circumference by your lowerhip circumference you get 8 cm. 8 cm divided by 9 will give you the intake of your waist darts. In this case 0.88 cm or 8.8 mm we round this up to 0.9 cm or 9 mm. This is not a negative number, but just one millimeter less than 1 cm. All you need to do when drafting your pattern, is measure 9 mm for each of the waist dart intakes.
Happy sewing,
Nehzat
