I am making a costume for an event.
It will look a lot like this:
http://images.cosplay.com/photos/26/2610534.jpg
It consists of a leotard/bodysuit made out of spandex, and dettachable skirt, collar, and bows made out of dull satin. My reservations are on how to prepare the spandex and satin for sewing, and tips on how to sew with them properly. I have not worked much with these fabrics before. Any help would be great! : )
Here it is!! I didn't realize the link went inactive. Sorry about that. ^^;
Dear LadyMoonShine,
No problem, I see now what you are trying to make.
In terms of preparing your fabrics, you need to square the satin by drawing a thread and press it as well.
The bow needs to be cut on a true bias to give it a better bouncy shape just like your picture. Here are two chapters from the Dress Sewing with Pleated Skirt Video Lesson that show how to cut on a bias:
17. Cutting Biased Fabric Strips for Spaghetti Straps
18. Cutting the Biased Fabric Strips for the Piping
For spandex you can square it by using a straight angler ruler to draw a line at a 90 degree angle to the salvage and then cut the line. You don't need to press this fabric in advance.
For spandex fabric you can use a stretch needle.

Thank you for the reply. : ) That makes sense. Do I need to prewash them, or does the pressing take care of shrinking all by itself?
Dear LadyMoonShine,
You there is no need to pre wash your materials.

Just as a follow-up...I'm currently working on this project now...I want the front bow to stand up and hold its shape. I was going to use a heavy fusible interfacing for that. Can I still use interfacing with fabric that's been cut on the bias?
Also, I've just begun to cut out the pattern pieces for the spandex bodysuit. I plan on pinning them to the dress form to check fit, but how do I put the suit back on the dress form once everything has been stitched up without stretching it out too much?
Thank you. : )
Dear LadyMoonShine,
Yes you can use interfacing for fabric that is cut on a bias as long as you cut your interfacing on a bias as well.
To check the fit of the bodysuit you can leave one of the seams open. The one that will let you put the bodysuit on the dress form easier. Mark the seam line on both sides of the seam that you left open. This way once you have it on the dress form you know where to pin to check the fit. Fold one side of the seam along the stitch mark and place it on the other side, aligning the folded edge with the other sides stitch mark, and pin.
Hope this helps you out.

Nehzat
Dear LadyMoonShine,
I could not open the link where the picture is posted. If you could please post the link again or imbed the picture here in the discussion forum.
Thanks,
