MY 9 YR. OLD SON IS SHORT AND CHUNKIE. I HAVE TO GET HIM SIZE 14/16 PANTS. HEMMING THE PANTS IS NO PROBLEM PRETTY STRAIGHT FORWARD, TO LONG CUT THEM AND HEM TO HIS SIZE BUT ONCE I DO THAT MY PROBLEM IS HIS CROTCH HANGS TOO LOW . LAST YEAR HE WENT TO SCHOOL AND ALOT OF KIDS MADE FUN OF HIM I WAS MAD AND MY SON WAS SAD, SO HOW DO I FIX THAT PROBLEM AND PLEASE DON'T SAY BRING IT TO THE CLEANERS TO GET ALTERATIONS DONE IF I COULD AFFORD THAT I WOULD OF DONE THAT A LONG TIME AGO !!
I THOUGH I COULD JUST MARK THE PANTS UP WHERE MY SONS CROTCH REALLY IS AND JUST CUT THE CROTCH AND ALITTLE OF THE PANT LEG AND RESEW THEM BACK UP BUT NEVER READ ANYTHING LIKE THAT WHEN SEARCHING THE COMPUTER CAN THAT BE DONE OR CAN SOMEONE TELL ME IN DETAIL HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. HIS INSEAM IS 22" THE PANTS INSEAM IS 28" (HAVE NO SEWING MACHINE WILL BE DONE BY HAND) HELP !!!
Dear Phylis,
You can reduce the crotch length by sewing a new seam line on each leg starting at the crotch seam and merging it with the existing seam line at the knee. Then trim the excess fabric.
The amount you can take in on the in seam at the crotch should not be more than 2 cm or 6/8 of an inch. Any more and the front and back inseams will become different lengths.
If this is not enough of an adjustment, then you can remove the waistband and sew it a bit further down or as much as possible before hitting the pockets.
I hope this helps.
