My name is Monica, and I plan to make a couple of undergarment strap dress out of different color of silks to ware under summer dresses.
My pattern is an old undergarment that was cut on bias. From previous experience I found it extremly difficult to keep the bias pieces of the fabric in the shape of the pattern while joinning them together by basting.
I tought of making a draft paper pattern just for sandwiching it between the pieces. After I stich them by machine, I could wet the draft paper pattern just along the stiches and pull it away. That could damage the fabric if it stains from water. I hope I make sense.
Do you suggest another solution? Thank you.
Dear Monica,
I suggest that you add more notch marks on your pattern pieces and transferring this notch marks to your fabric pieces. This way when you are sewing the seams you have more reference points for matching and lining up the pieces.
Something else you can try, is pinning the bias fabric pieces together before basting them by hand. This should help keep the layers in place as you work on them.
First pin the ends, then in the middle, then in between. Do this for all the seams you intend to baste. Baste using a double threaded needle.
Let me know if this helps.
Happy sewing,
Nehzat
