Newbie - essential sewing materials needed

Hello,

My name is Ana and I am in San Diego, CA.  I was planning on taking sewing courses at a local school here but my schedule does not allow me to do so.  So when I found this website I was really excited!  I am completely new to sewing...I have no experience whatsoever.  I will be upgrading my account here soon so that I can get full access to the videos.  I want to learn to make my own clothes...I have so many ideas! :) I have not purchased any items yet.  The first on my list is, of course, the sewing machine.  Can anyone tell me what other essentials I will need?

 Dear Ana,

The essential things you will need besides a sewing machine are:

  • Light Color Cotton Fabric 
  • Large Scissors for cutting Fabric
  • Small scissors for trimming
  • Measuring Tape
  • Straight Triangle and Regular Ruler 
  • Tailors Chalk
  • Pins
  • Seam Ripper
  • Sewing Needles
  • A thimble
  • Paper for Pattern (if you plan to draft)
  • Different Color Threads
  • 5 Standard and 2 Invisible Zippers about 20 cm long. Lighter colors help you see so its easier to work with them.

 

Depending on future projects, you will need to buy other items.
