Hi

Adjustments / recycle.

I have a leather jacket which does not fit properly. I am thinking of taking out the sleeves and making it into a gilet.

1. If I take out the sleeves, can i cut the armhole to shape it into a gilet?
2. How much can i cut back on the shoulder length?
3. Can i taper down from the shoulder to the bottom of the armhole as there is a smal pocket at the armhole level, i don not want to cut to close to the pocket as this would not look right. ?
4. Do i need to adjust anywhere else on the jacket if I go ahead with reshaping the armhole?

Many thanks,

Re: Remodeling a leather jacket into a gilet (vest)

Dear tricone,

Do a fitting after removing the sleeves. Check to see how much excess you have along the armholes at the shoulder lines. Pinch the excess amount, This should give you an idea of how much you will need to take in from the shoulder seams.

Now you can decide if you want to keep the armholes as they are or if you want to shorten the shoulders or lower the armholes.

If you have excess material along the side seams, you can take in from the side seams as well.

Hope this helps.

Happy sewing,

Nehzat
