Sleeves that fit a larger arm

Dear Sewing Friends,

I have sewn my own clothing for years and still have not figured out how to deal with this.

I am small boned and have an arm that measures about 17-19 inches around and very small shoulders.  Another way to say this is that I have size 6 shoulders and size 14 arms.  When I alter my patterns to allow for this, I get an uneven hem on a short sleeve, a too tight fit in the armhole and shoulder and a really strange shape to long armed shirts.  Can you help?

Dear Phyllis

Our April 2012 video lesson will cover sleeve pattern making and after that we will release another video lesson regarding how to sew a garment with a sleeve.
