What do I do with the pockets when altering pants side seams and waistband

Hello.

I'm considering signing up for the esewingworkshop.  My greatest need right now is how to do alterations-mainly side seam and waistband. 

The pants on the alteration video do not have pockets.  I have a pair of Levis jeans that requires taking in two inches from the waistband and about 3/4" from the sides.  My jeans, however have pockets, but your pants in the video do not have pockets.  Please explain what to do with the pockets when taking in the side seams.

Hi Denise, You may only take

Hi Denise,

You may only take in from the center back if the pants are not too large, otherwise you can take in from the sides as well, to make it fit.

This would apply to both men's and women's pants, whether for dress pants or jeans.

If the pants are too large and we take in all the excess fabric from the center back, we could end up with a lot off loose fabric at the buttocks area. It is best to check and see during fitting to make sure that you can remove all the excess from the center back, or if you need to take some from the sides as well.

Hi Nehzat, My husbands pants

Hi Nehzat,

My husbands pants is too big for him.........Does  mens pants   get  altered same as ladies, or  from the back seam?

Re: How to take in the side seams on jeans at the pockets

To take in the side seams remove any top stitches. You should also remove any copper rivets in the area.

Then take in the side seams like there are no pockets, basically the fabric for the pockets goes in the side seam as you re-sew the seam.

Look at the way the side seam was put together at the pockets and repeat.
