Dear Nehzat,

Thanks you so much for such a great website and clear teaching instructions.

I have a query about checking the upper hip measurement on the pattern.

I had tried drafting the skirt pattern. When I checked my upper hip circumference measurement against the total three measurements of the upper hip circumference in the patterns (front plus back), the measurements is greater than my upper hip measurement. I understand that the measurements should be smaller and not greater.

Kindly advise.

Thanks.

Re: Checking the Upper Hip Measurement

Dear atan,

First make sure that you have measured your waistline, upper hip and lower hip circumferences correctly.

It is possible for the upper hip measurement of the pattern to be larger than the actual upper hip circumference of the body. This occurs when the body is flatter between the waistline and the lower hip area.

To fix this on your pattern you need to extend the dart lengths. Extend the center line of each dart down by several cm. Then start by measuring 2 cm below the dart points and mark.

Now you need to redraw the dart legs. Use a different colored pencil. You will notice that you have widened the darts a bit along the upper hipline.

Re-measure the upper hipline and compare the difference with your actual measurement. If you need to, extend the dart legs a bit further down until the upper hip measurement of the pattern is a bit less than your actual measurement. This way you can add a bit to the upper hiplines on the front and back pattern side seams and draw a curved line down to the lower hipline.

Even if the difference is 2 to 3 mm on each side seam of the front and back patterns, this will be enough to let you draw the curved lines you need for the side seams.

I hope this helps you out.

Happy sewing,

Nehzat

Upper hip circumference

Hi, first of all I love the clarity of the video instructions. But like atan, when I add up the upper hip circumference it is larger than the actual upper hip measurement/2. I've tried doing this pattern three times. I thought maybe I'm not measuring the exact same place when I measure distances between lower hip and waist, so my upper hip distance is also off. The second time around, I tried having my sister help me measure. This time, the third time, I marked my body to make sure I'm measuring exactly from my waist to my hips. But every single time, the calculated upper hip circumference comes out to be bigger than the actual.

For this time, the difference was 2.8cm. I extended each dart by 2cm, and the difference went down to 2.1cm (so 1.05cm for each side seam). Any advice on this??

Re: Drafting the Skirt Pattern

Dear empress4lyphe,

Thanks so much. First you should also make sure that you have measured the waist circumference and the lower hip circumference correctly as well.

Still this kind of situation could occur for those who are flatter between their waist and their lower hipline.

The solution here would be to extend the darts until the upper hipline of the pattern is just a bit less than half of the actual upper hip circumference.

Happy sewing,

Nehzat

How to measure the Upper and Lower Hip circumference properly

Dear Nehzat,

Thanks so much for your clear explaination.

I realise I have to use the full figure way of measuring as I think I might have measured wrongly.

I'll go through the video and seek your advice again if I encounter any difficulties.

Thanks

Agnes
