Getting serious about sewing again

Hi, I just joined. Right now I am sewing a trench coat  and have been searching for attatching the under collar. I have the both upper and lower pieces attatched and am guessing I would hand sew the lower inside, I am also wondering the best way do the lining. I have learned so much doing this already,but am going slowly because I want it to look high-end.  It would be great to have a jacket video with different lining techniques-bagged,etc. Also I would love to learn pattern drafting,changing sleeves and collars and having a full arsenal to be really creative. I just joined and am amazed at the quality of the Videos. I used to teach sewing many years ago to 4H kids.  I've since lost a lot of skills and aim to gain them back and learn new ones.  I'm interested in making a DressForm for myself - any help there would be grateful.  Also, I'm interested in learning more about Drafting Patterns.  I'm not very interested in purchasing patterns, as they need so much work.  It would be nice to be able to Draft and Design at home now that I'm retired.

Thanks for this wonderful site.  I wonder if they are teaching the 4H groups how to Draft their own patterns now?  That would be a great place to begin sewing and understand and appreciate all the steps.

Dear Michelle,

Usually trench coats collars are placed between the shell and facing then sewn by machine. If you don't have facing at the back of the neck-line, place the collar between the lining and the shell at the back.

To join the lining, match the lining shoulder seam to the facing shoulder seam and pin it from the top to the bottom on both sides then pin the lining neck-line to the facing nick-line at the center first then on the sides. Finish it by machine.

 Make sure to do the hem the bottom of the lining before joining it to the shell.

Yes, the jacket sewing lesson will begin with how to draft the pattern, using the bodice block pattern video that we have already thought: Bodice Block Pattern-making Video Lessons

Then we will style this pattern and make it into a jacket pattern, and lining pattern.

We will use these patterns to sew the jacket step by step.

i, too, have been bitten by the sewing bug..my daughter gave my granddaughter a sewing machine for christmas, and low and behold the task of teaching her to sew fell to me...suddenly, those years of home economics came pouring back..it occurred to me that sewing skills are not being taught in schools...anyway, i'm now making cloths for the grandkids and i went out and bought a new machine....hope i can operate it
