Hello Nehzat,

Can you, please, help me understand which type of interfacing to use with what material.  I'm watching the video on Dress Sewing with Pleated Skirt.  It was a cotton fabric, with a knitted interfacing.  I wondered why a knitted interfacing would be used on a fabric that did not stretch.  There are so many types of interfacing, I would really appreciate knowing more about it.

How to Choose Different Types of Interfacing

Hi Sewmama,

Based on my experience, I find that the combination of the fabric and interfacing I used in the Dress with Pleated Skirt Lesson, works well. Since the knitted interfacing is more flexible, it takes the shape of the body very well. It gives enough support to the top edge of the dress, without interfering with the soft look I wanted to create.

As a general rule the thickness of the interfacing corresponds with the thickness of the fabric. However you should always have on hand a few yards or meters of different types of interfacing to test on your project. This way you can check and see whichtype of interfacing will give you the look you want to create.

For example, you may be using a heavy fabric but do not want to make it stiff by applying a heavy interfacing. You can choose a lighter interfacing to give a softer appearance to your work.
