Hello, I've just joined and my name is Margaret. I enjoy most crafts and am looking forward to getting to know all about this site. At the moment I am wanting to make soft toys with long dangly arms and legs.   I do'nt know how to go about cutting out a head shape (with mousetype features) and would be most grateful for any advice.

Re: How to Draft a Head for a Mouse Soft Toy

Hi Knottedthreads,

One way to go about learning how to construct a stuffed toy is to look at some examples.

First you need to bring down the head of the stuffed toy to its basic shapes, such as a ball shape for the head and a cone shape for the snout. You can look at samples available in many stores or samples you may have at hope. You can also buy a stuffed toy and see how the pieces are cut and sewn together to create the desired shape. Then you may open the stitches to see the individual pieces and get ideas on how to draft your pattern from them.

You should always make a pattern before cutting your fabric. Mark the pattern to point out where the pieces will be sewn together and transfer these marks to the fabric seam allowances.

Flexible fabrics will form to the desired shapes much easier. Keep in mind that you can use seams, darts, and pressure to shape the stuffed toy.

Happy sewing,

Nehzat
