Hello, I am a new sewer I been practicing on and off for a couple of years.

Two years agofor christmas I got a brand new sewing machine and a new serger,I love them! but I feel intimated by the serger its still in the box sealed I have not tried to work with it. My question: Is it good or nesscary to have a sewing machine and serger too? I really can't wait to follow and learn how to use the serger although, I am still learning how to use my sewing machine now that I have my home I have way more space i can sew plenty if I deired.

If anyone has a serger drop me a line and let me know if its good to have both
machines to work side by side. Is it a good combo and which is better to use.

Any reply welcome, thanks to all replies

Re: Serger

When I got my serger I was scared to use it too. My Mom showed me how to use it since she had one too. Your best bet is to take it to someone elce who uses one too, or take it to the store you bought it from and ask them to show you how to use it. If you don't know anyone who sews then call your locl girl scouts or 4H program. Churches are also a great way to find people who sew.

A serger is awesome for finishing seams. I use mine all the time for sewing garments and all sorts of items. I'd also recommend looking online for serger videos. Serger books too.

Good luck!

A serger is the best

A serger is the best invention since sliced bread

A serger is a friend to the sewing machine but does not replace a sewing machine they do entirely differant types of sewing

Serger

This is a comment who hadn't used serger much.

I must say I can't live without my serger.   I use it all the time.  Especially if you sew knits, like t-shirts, cut and sew, you can sew whole garments with only serger if you choose.

If you are scared of serger, just try using with old T-shirts you are ready to trash.  Knits are forgiving fabric, too.   I learned a lot from books.  There are some good serger books out there.  I recommend borrowing some from the library, and if you like one, buy it to keep at your hand for a reference.

A serger, like a sewing machine, beside the construction, can do a lot of decorative stitches.  I wish I have a 5 thread machine with chain stitch, and cover stitch.  Mine doesn't.  But I still enjoy my serger.

In case you want to hem knit fabric like ready-made, but don't have cover stitch, you can try twin needle, and sew straight stitches, or experiment with other stitches (like feather stiches, blind hem stiches, etc.)  with twin needle.  They make a nice stiches, and cover the raw edges nicely wrong side.

Enjoy your serger!

Surger

As you learn to use your surger, it will become an indispensible item in your sewing arsenal.  Having a surger and a sewing machine is not unlike having a regular oven & a microwave oven  They both enhance your ability to get that food on the table . The microwave speeds things up & sew (so) does the surger.  The surger makes clothing items look more professionaly finished.  Just look inside your retail clothes on the inside and see the way the seams are finished. It looks better & seams are stronger (won't fray).  Surgers can also be utilized in decorative stitching in clothing & craft items.  Once you learn the basics & loose the fear you will wonder how you lived without that little machine.  Hope this helped encourage you.  Oh.  I forgot the most important aspect.  Working with knit & stretch fabric is a must.  When you get confident you can complete some things without using your sewing machine at all!!
