You can find the explanation on how to cut on a bias in the following chapters our Dress Sewing with Pleated Skirt Lesson, However you need to be a subscriber to get access to the video clips.
Just joined today, looking forward to learning a lot from the site. I've been attempting to sew since high school. I love it, it is so relaxing but I too am not very happy with the results I get all the time. I hope this site will be very beneficial. Lizzie, I don't know the machine but I've recently taken up learning to quilt (which is how I got to this site) so if you got your new machine let me know how you like it. I may have to look into getting one. :) By the way, I'm from California
Hi my name is susan and I have patterns for dog outfits, and it gives you the general shape but you have to enlarge it by 180% to make it actually fit the dog. How do I do this?
Hi, There are a few sites out there that give ideas and instructions on how to make different style tea cosies. You can try http://www.rustybobbin.com/inklings/sew-teacozy.html, they have a step by step process on how to make a simple tea cozy.
We used a YKK brand zipper for this lesson. It should be quite common. However you can buy this type of zipper online as well. Here is a site you can try.
To gather fabric, you need to lower the top thread tension and set the straight stitch length to a longer setting, however for heavier materials like fleece you should use the longest setting.
The right side of the fabric should always be facing upwards as well.
After sewing the two rows that are about 4 mm apart, gather the fabric by pulling on both the bobbin threads at the same time.
Pull a bit and spread the gathered fabric, then repeat until you get the desired length.
Thanks for the encouragement. Sometimes I get overwhelmed in my mind about sewing. Oh, I saw you on facebook a couple of months back and joined as a friend. My user name is JCSmitty and it's 99 percent sewing! That's why I joined FB to try to connect to sewers. :-) Thanks again.
Sorry for the late response. I have posted a response which i made previously on how to miter binding. I will repeat it here for you.
Sewing a single fold binding with a miter corner
You can find explanations bellow each picture.
In the near future we are going to make a video lesson covering this topic. I hope this will do for now.
1. To sew a square corner using a biased binding tape, first sew to the edge of the fabric like this. Then reverse stitch the last two stitches to secure the thread.
2. Now cut off the Threads.
3. Fold the binding tape at the corner so that the folded edge lies at an angle and meets the inside edge of the sewn section
4. Repeat for the other side, underneath.
5. Make sure the edge of the fabric falls in the center fold of the binding tape.
6. Pin the rest of the binding in place. If you like you can hand baste it to keep it in place better before sewing by machine.
Hand basting will make it easier to sew the binding by machine, and prevents puckering.
7. Start with a reverse stitch to secure the binding at the corner.
8. To hide the end of the threads, you can pass them trough a needle and sew two small backstitches by hand then cut the threads.
If this is not what you were looking for, please post the dimensions of your cross stitch piece and the width of the border you want to sew. Also let me know if you want to sew lining on the back.
This way I can calculate and give you exact directions.
I have answered this question some where else, but I will repeat it here for you.
One easy ways to shorten the crotch of pants is to remove the waistband and re-sew it further down, this can be done if the pockets do not get in the way. Also make sure the hemlines are still in the right position.
The other way is to bring up the in seem at the crotch. However you can only decrease the crotch length by about 2 cm when using this method.
Make sure you do a fitting before trimming any excess fabric.
Dear Mutley,
We will definitely cover Eyelet or Grommet curtains in a future video lesson. However in the mean time you can watch these videos.
To make the Eyelets you can watch these videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkH543RkI_I
or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkEKr2w7a7U
For the lined curtain you can watch this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkH543RkI_I
There are other places online, you can Google search grommet as well as eyelet curtains to get more results.
Thanks,
Nehzat
