I'm happy to see that you love our site, I hope you get everything you want from it. We have added the pants pattern making to our list of lessons to make. After we will make a lesson on sewing pants.
Welcome to the site. I am sure you can use the video lessons to learn and improve your sewing skills. By watching the videos, you can gain knowledge you can use for many different projects including making cloths for your children.
We are working on releasing a lesson on how to use ready made patters. In the mean time you can watch the pattern making lessons on the site to understand how patterns work. There are many things in common between our pattern making lessons and the ready made ones you can buy. This will help you to read and understand patterns better.
I myself have sewn a lot for my children. This is very rewarding and gives great happiness to your children and yourself.
Hi my name is helen and i have just bought a sewing machine, i havent used one for 25 years. My aim is to take the hems up on my jeans and hopefully TRY and make a skirt with the help from this site. Wish me luck and happy sewing.
We are working on releasing the Shoulder Shortening and Shoulder Pad Alteration on a Jacket video lesson for April. We are also working on the pants block pattern lesson as well, to be released soon.
To understand the dart intake calculation you can watch the chapter: 5. Calculating the Intake of the Darts in the Straight and Tapered Skirt Block Pattern video lesson. Here I explain why we need to divide by nine to get the dart intake measurements.
Keep in mind that the waistline of the bodice and the skirt are the same waistline and therefore we need them to be exactly the same, matching the darts to each other.
One way to go about learning how to construct a stuffed toy is to look at some examples.
First you need to bring down the head of the stuffed toy to its basic shapes, such as a ball shape for the head and a cone shape for the snout. You can look at samples available in many stores or samples you may have at hope. You can also buy a stuffed toy and see how the pieces are cut and sewn together to create the desired shape. Then you may open the stitches to see the individual pieces and get ideas on how to draft your pattern from them.
You should always make a pattern before cutting your fabric. Mark the pattern to point out where the pieces will be sewn together and transfer these marks to the fabric seam allowances.
Flexible fabrics will form to the desired shapes much easier. Keep in mind that you can use seams, darts, and pressure to shape the stuffed toy.
Yes, I too would like to learn this. I only made a pair of trousers once using a vougue pattern years ago. I haven't made a pair since. I want to make them complete with pockets, zipper, back pocket, etc. I can make a simple pair of pants but to learn how to make a pair of trousers for my husband would be grand to say the least ^_^
Hi brown64, I never did get to that project last fall, I was going to use a pattern that I purchased, it is simplicity easy to sew 5253. I have promised myself to make that pretty fleece jacket this year!
When we sew straight stitches the thread tension setting on the machine may be perfect. However when sewing zigzag or decorative stitches the needle moves side to side, needing more thread for the stitches. Therefore we need to adjust the thread tension by lowering it.
Test your stitches, you may also need to adjust the bobbin thread tension, by lowering it a bit as well.
Hi Katy, It seams to me that the problem you are having is with the bobbin thread tension, not the top thread tension. If the bobbin thread tension is lighter, the bobbin thread will poke trough and be visible on the surface of you work.
You should have a slight resistance in the bobbin as the thread is being pulled trough the bobbin case.
You can usually adjust the tension by adjusting a screw on the bobbin case.
Based on my experience, I find that the combination of the fabric and interfacing I used in the Dress with Pleated Skirt Lesson, works well. Since the knitted interfacing is more flexible, it takes the shape of the body very well. It gives enough support to the top edge of the dress, without interfering with the soft look I wanted to create.
As a general rule the thickness of the interfacing corresponds with the thickness of the fabric. However you should always have on hand a few yards or meters of different types of interfacing to test on your project. This way you can check and see whichtype of interfacing will give you the look you want to create.
For example, you may be using a heavy fabric but do not want to make it stiff by applying a heavy interfacing. You can choose a lighter interfacing to give a softer appearance to your work.
When you do the fitting, you can check to see if you need to take in from the side seams, inseams and or the crotch. This depends on how the pants fit.

I was just told by a good friend this past Sunday that God give us talents, sometimes many talents, to express the creativity inside. But, your identity is not in your talent.
Your identity is who you are in Him.
Everthing else is the gift He has given us just to show us a fraction of His creativity!

Hi Shirley,,
There should be instructions with your pattern that you used to cut the jacket. You need to follow the step by step instructions in the package.
To get some idea on how to do this you can watch: Sweater Remodeling (Pullover Alteration) Sewing Video Lessons
In the future we will cover this topic in a detailed video lesson.
Yours,
Nehzat.
Hi Louise,
Yes you need to add seam allowances to the drafted block pattern.
