I am happy to hear that you are back to sewing and not giving up. Congratulations on sewing for your grandchildren last Halloween.
A good way to find out how to attach the collar of a men's shirt, is to partially take apart an old shirt at the collar, to see how it has been sewn. This way you can find out which seams where sewn first and how much to trim the seam allowances. This way you will get a good result.

One with a point! Just kiddin. What I know is when sewing with knits you need a ball point needle, when sewing with woven fabric (cotton etc.) use a regular sewing needle, sometimes you might need a bigger needle with a larger eye so you can use more than one strand of thread. One of the most helpful things I learned in the hand sewing section was cutting the thread at an angle, man does that make threading the needle easy or what.
I'm new to the site also, I'm not sure if I should be commenting, so wait to hear from Nehzat for the for sure answer, but that's what I do and what I've been told.
How you doing with your sewing? I joined this site about a month ago. I can honestly say my sewing has improved 100%. I did some sewing in the past but I never really knew how to do it right. So I am really enjoying the sewing essential videos. Happy sewing!
I just wanted you to know how much your sewing essentials classes are improving my sewing skills. I can actually thread a needle now without pulling my hair out. I now hand baste (which I learned how to baste from your hand sewing essentials) my zippers in,than I sew them by machine and man what an improvment! I am going through all the essential lessons. Thanks for doing them! And what a great job you guys do!
You may want to search some commercial patterns here. I like this site because they have most of commercial pattern companies in one place to view and purchase. While you are at it, you may have more ideas for your windows.
If you have an overcasting foot, it should work great. I tried to upload a picture, but it didn't work, sorry.
This foot has a bar in the middle, and the needle of the zigzag goes over the bar. So the bar prevents fabric from pulled by the thread. Also this foot has a guide, so you put the edge of the fabric along the guide, meaning you don't trim the edge after stitching. So trim the seam allowance to the finish width, and go over with this foot.
If you don't have it, you can get it online or from a dealer. I believe every machine has this attachement.
Imagine that you have a tube like skirt that has to fit around the widest part of your body. This can be your lower hip or upper hip. Now to fit it around your waistline, you need to take in the excess fabric using darts and the centre back and side seams. To spread the difference nicely between the darts and side seams, I have found that dividing the difference between the lower/upper hip circumference and the waist circumference by 9 works best.
To find out why we divide by 9 to get the dart intakes you can watch the video: Why Do We Need Darts. All these divisions are based on the average proportions of the human body, and will give you the best results.
To understand the dart intake calculation you can watch the chapter: 5. Calculating the Intake of the Darts in the Straight and Tapered Skirt Block Pattern video lesson. Here I explain why we need to divide by nine to get the dart intake measurements.
Keep in mind that the waistline of the bodice and the skirt are the same waistline and therefore we need them to be exactly the same, matching the darts to each other.
For thinner fabric you can set the zigzag stitch a little narrower and use a thinner needle and thread. You can also lower the thread tension of the bobbin and needle. Make sure both seam allowances are being finished with zigzag stitches at the same time and away from the raw edges, then trim the excess.
If you're still not satisfied with the results, other options you have are:
Yea, this was lesson learned by a mistake. My top bra area was lined with the main fabric, and I didn't realize this problem until I made the bottom. I'll soon post this swimsuit on the gallery. My friends loved it.
Please read the below point to learn how to fix your pants pattern.
This is caused by the excess crotch lenght at the back. The way you reduced the lenght by folding is correct. In addition you can reduce the croch length by wathcing the Pants Pattern Aleration video lessons's Decreasing the Crotch Length From the Inseam chapter here. When the buttocks is flat the crotch level line needs to be shortened from the crotch point, this will prevent sagging below the buttocks/upper thighs.
Let out from side seams, center back seams and darts to compensate for the snug uppper hip/waist.
You need to take in from side seams from the hips/thighs area.
Sorry about the delay in getting back to you - I've been very busy in the last few weeks. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
There are two ways to sew a dress with lining. Please let me know if your dress has facing around the neckline and armhole, or are you not planning to use facing?
Thanks for the suggesetion! We are going to release a video lesson on this topic. In the mean time, you can watch shears being used on many different video lessons on our website to see the way I use scissors. Just have a look at the table of content in every video lesson and watch cutting chapters.

This is good way to make a dress form. It work well as long as you stuff it the right amount for the person it was made for to keep the correct shape.

Dear Jnjewel,
For this kind of project, you need to purchase the same stretch level in both main fabric and lining to achive a proper fit.
You can even use the main fabric for the lining as well.
Happy sewing!

Dear nicgir,
Yes we will be making a video lesson on how to draft a sleeve block pattern first, then we will be making different outfits using that.
